Yes, it's true. I've gone and created a new account. I just...felt the need for change. My style's changed quite a bit. *heh* And to celebrate, I wanted a new account to start afresh. Plus, I've been wanting to change my DA moniker for some time.

No worries, though! I still love my Aeyka-chan and will be drawing her, because, well, y'know, she's ME. Kind of.

I'm not going to lie. I've become hopelessly obsessed with Sweeney Todd. Why, the film has even become my absolute favorite! Yet, I feel really ashamed to admit it. I mean, I shouldn't, right? If I love it, I should say it with pride!

But I don't. The thing is, I feel that the film is going to become the next Nightmare Before Christmas. What I mean is, there's probably going to be a huge bunch of people who are going to declare ST their favorite film or something just because it's a Tim Burton production. I'm afraid the film is going to be known as the "Burton-Depp Musical." But that's a whole 'nother rant...

I've been watching the play on Youtube and there's been a whole lot of flack about which is better. The movie or the play? I've noticed a pattern. The people who originally saw the George Hearn-Angela Lansbury version said that the play was better. People who saw the movie adaptation said that the film was better. Me? I love them both. I believe both versions are great in their own way.

George Hearn and Johnny Depp both play Sweeney well. I have yet to see the other stage versions, so I'm just giving my opinion of these two actors. For singing, George Hearn is definitely better, although I must give Johnny props. He took the songs and made them his own. What people tend to forget is that the movie and play are different. On stage, you have to project and engage the audience in the action. One part I liked better in the play is during "Epiphany." As Hearn is singing "You sir! How about a shave?!" he directs that line to the audience, further engaging them into the story. It feels more real...and you can just feel his anger.

On that note, anger is in the lyrics and the music, not to mention, how much of it George shouts and growls. George Hearn's Sweeney is more outwardly angry, which makes sense, considering that on the stage subtle looks are hard to get across to the back row. Johnny's Sweeney is much more depressed and inwardly tormented, because the medium(film) allows it. Plus, the part of Sweeney was originally written for a baritone and Johnny's a tenor, so the songs sound different.

Now here's what I like about the movie. It's visually stunning. You really get a feel for the time period. On stage, you wouldn't be able to have extremely lavish sets. Also, Johnny speaks the lyrics sometimes, which give a creepy feel. When he literally growls "I want you bleeders" you believe him. I'm not gonna lie, I got goosebumps during his version of "Epiphany." The speaking and snarling just made it more sinister. Backed up with the orchestrations, it made quite an impact.

What I'm trying to say is that don't judge the play if you've only seen the movie and vice versa. Both versions are great. Also, don't compare the actors when watching. They both give their own version of the Sweeney Todd character. There's a reason there are so many adaptations of this story. It gives you a chance to see the performers' interpretations of it. If you're a true fan of Sweeney Todd, you won't feel the need to bash or discriminate. Just be happy that there are so many different versions to watch. It really gives you a chance to see the story told in a different way.
